Jamie Smolen, MD, received his undergraduate degree in biology at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. He went on to get his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Vermont and a residency in orthopedics at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Smolen later completed residency training in psychiatry at Boston University and a fellowship in addiction psychiatry at the University of South Florida. Dr. Smolen is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with special qualification in addiction psychiatry.
Before coming to the UF Health Florida Recovery Center in 2012, Dr. Smolen had his own addiction and general psychiatry practice in Bradenton, Fla., where he specialized in pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy and facilitated an intensive outpatient program for people with substance use disorders. He also worked as a hospital consultant, providing detoxification and crisis stabilization from drug and alcohol dependence.
Dr. Smolen is an evaluator for the Florida Professionals Resource Network, Intervention Project for Nurses and the Florida Department of Health. Dr. Smolen’s consulting expertise has also been sought by several Major League Baseball teams and the National Football League. In his role at the University of Florida and the UF Health Florida Recovery Center, Dr. Smolen devotes himself exclusively to the evaluation and treatment of addiction and the psychiatric disorders that are commonly associated with addiction. Dr. Smolen also operates an outpatient practice and regularly teaches medical students, residents and addiction medicine fellows. He gives presentations on a variety of topics, including the spiritual aspects of recovery and substance abuse on college campuses. His first novel, “Hooked,” was published in 2011 and illustrates how easily addiction can take over someone’s life. It also details the essential steps to achieve sobriety and recovery.
